3 Things You Need to Know to Sell Anything

If you’re struggling to put together an ad that actually drives sales, don’t worry—I know exactly how you feel. I’ve tried everything, from YouTube marketing “gurus” to those sketchy Instagram Reels where you comment “sales” for a half-baked marketing guide.
At first, I had no idea what I was doing, and everything seemed overly complicated and flashy.
But the truth? It’s simpler than hunting down some secret knowledge.
Before we dive into what makes a winning ad, it’s essential to understand what not to do and why so much advertising today misses the mark.
Pick Your Battles
We’re all led to believe in all kinds of ineffective marketing techniques throughout our lives.
Take, for instance, Coca-Cola’s Christmas commercials with the polar bears. Why they run this is anyone's guess, but when you have Coca-Cola’s ad budget, anything goes in the name of “brand awareness.”
The commercial implies that some fancy CGI and a bear drinking a soda will somehow sell more Coke. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen a can of Diet Coke and thought, “Oh yeah, the Christmas bears! Gotta buy one.”
This is just one of many examples where massive brands use questionable marketing. With endless budgets, they can afford to throw anything at the wall to see what sticks. Most businesses, however, don’t have this luxury.
These big-name strategies have skewed our view of what truly makes an ad effective and have trapped us into thinking we need to adopt similar approaches.
“The ad needs a celebrity.”
“The ad should be funny.”
“It has to have a catchy jingle.”
And, God forbid: “The product needs to be cheap!”
Forget mass marketing. Focus on your ideal clients and speak directly to them.
3 Most Important Questions for a Successful Ad
Grab a notepad; here are the three components of a successful ad campaign.
Element 1: Who is your target audience?
Probably the most crucial element. It doesn’t matter what your product or service is; there’s a specific audience it’s geared toward, and it’s up to you to identify them.
Crafting a message for these people is essential because it’s nearly impossible to create one that resonates with everyone.
Element 2: What is the message?
What do you say to your audience to make them buy from you today? That’s your message.
It’s a competitive world out there, so your ad needs to cut through the noise. Make it fresh, engaging, and definitely not focused on being the cheapest.
Element 3: How are you reaching these people?
Once you’ve nailed down the first two elements, think about how you’ll deliver the message. Surprisingly, many businesses never get to this step, so by covering just these three, you’re ahead of most.
Fortunately, social media has made this part straightforward. With Meta or Google ads, you can target anyone you like: local customers, specific age groups, gender, and interests.
What’s great about Meta/Google ads is that you can test multiple audiences simultaneously and fine-tune your ad as results come in.
By sticking to these three principles, you’ll be leagues ahead of most marketers and on your way to the massive results you’re after.
